Chapter 13

"I want to go. I'm ready to go. I'm going through withdrawal!" Electra glared at the object of her extreme frustration.

Drew threw his hands up. "All right. But you most certainly are not going by yourself. Can you wait until Thursday? Then I'll be able to go with you."

Electra sat back on her heels. How did she feel about that? She didn't know, couldn't analyze her feelings, with Drew planted directly in front of her. They had talked about hiking together of course, but this sudden, irresistible urge had come upon her earlier that morning.

Unfortunately, Drew, who was supposed to be in town until after lunch, had arrived home far sooner than expected, and caught her packing her backpack. And he wasn't exactly happy about it.

She had to get away--away from everything--and do some thinking. Drew accompanying her would defeat the whole purpose. On the other hand, getting the geek away from his damn computer and into one of the environments she loved best suggested some interesting scenarios.

"Well?"

If she didn't know better, she'd say he sounded downright angry. But Drew never got angry. She sneaked a look at his face. A muscle jumped in his cheek. "I'll have to check with Roberta."

"Do that." Without another word he strode off down the hallway to his office.

Electra stared after him. "Jeez," she muttered under her breath. "Got out the wrong side of the bed this morning, did we?" She was tempted to pick up her pack and make a run for it. Drew didn't know that Ellen had lent her the car for the afternoon.

"Electra?" She jumped guiltily. Angry and impatient. She was having to revise all sorts of opinions about the man. "Phone's for you. It's my office line. You'll have to take it in here. Make it snappy, will you? I'm under deadline."

She abandoned her pack and walked as slowly as she dared down the hallway. "Bloody tyrant," she muttered under her breath as she stalked past Drew.

She picked up the phone. Mr. Perfect's desk looked like a tornado had hit it. "Hello?"

"How's my best buddy?"

"Samuel. You two-timing, lying, cheating, untrustworthy, double-crossing fink-rat."

"I love you, too. Drew said you took the news pretty well." His voice held a distinct wariness.

"That doesn't mean I don't want to kill you. Why didn't you tell me, you idiot?"

"Because you had these, er, rather unique plans. Because I'm a coward. Because I fell in love. Because I didn't know how to tell you. And I knew Drew was coming down there and he's always been the one who... Drew's always had this thing... He's been able to make things right for you, El. He's always been able to handle you much better than I ever could. You could never see that. We had this talk, you see, and--"

"What?" Her head reeling, Electra took a step back and promptly fell over the chair. Only Drew's strong arms prevented her from landing in an ignominious heap on the floor. She shook him off impatiently and sank into the chair.
